How to lay granite setts ?

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to lay granite setts effectively:
Plan and Prepare:
Start by planning the layout of your granite setts. Consider the design, pattern, and dimensions of your driveway or walkway. Use string lines and wooden stakes to outline the area.

Excavate and Prepare the Base:
Excavate the area to a depth of about 6-8 inches, depending on your local climate and soil conditions. Ensure that the base is level and compact it using a compactor to create a stable foundation.
Add a Layer of Sub-Base Material:
Depending on your local conditions, you may need to add a layer of sub-base material like crushed stone or gravel. This helps with drainage and further stabilizes the base.
Add a Layer of Sand:
Spread a layer of sand evenly over the compacted base. This layer should be about 1 inch thick. Use a screed board or a straight piece of wood to level the sand.
Lay the Granite Setts:
Start laying the granite setts from one corner or edge of the area you’ve outlined. Lay them in your chosen pattern, tapping them gently into the sand with a rubber mallet. Be sure to maintain even gaps between the setts for jointing.

Check for Level:

Compact and Settle:
After all the setts are in place, use a vibrating plate compactor to settle the setts into the sand bed. This helps lock them in position and ensures a stable surface.
Jointing:
Fill the gaps between the setts with jointing sand or mortar mix. Brush it into the gaps and use a broom to sweep away any excess. Make sure the joints are well-filled to prevent movement.
Final Compaction:
After jointing, lightly compact the surface again to help the jointing material settle and fill any gaps that may have formed.
Cleanup:
Clean the surface of any remaining jointing material and debris.
Sealing (optional):
Depending on your preference and the type of jointing material used, you may choose to seal the surface to enhance its longevity and appearance.
