      Which joints for outdoor paving?

Which joints to use when installing paving stones?

When you’re planning to create an outdoor paved surface, choosing the right filler between the pavers is essential to achieving an aesthetic, stable and long-lasting result.

Whick joints for outdoor paving ? Joints between pavers are not only a functional aspect, they also have an impact on the overall appearance of your outdoor design. In this article, we’ll explore the different types of joints for laying outdoor pavers and how to choose the right ones for your project.

Grass or turf joints for outdoor paving

For a more natural look, create more widely spaced joints between the paving stones, we advise a space of 3 to 5 cm, then add soil and plant grass in the spaces. This creates the look of paving with grassed joints, adding green and vegetation, ideal for areas where natural aesthetics are important. Grass joints help to promote drainage and biodiversity in urban areas.

For reclaimed cobblestones with grass joints, we recommend using larger cobbles such as our reclaimed Napoleon setts in size 18×18 cm.

      Thin mortar joints

Thin mortar joints use a mixture of cement, sand and water to fill the spaces between the pavers. They are thinner than conventional mortar joints, resulting in a more discreet joint. Lean mortar joints provide a clean, stable finish, ideal for projects where aesthetics and durability are important.

Sand to fill joints between pavers

Sand joints are the most common method of grouting outdoor paving stones. They involve filling the spaces between the pavers with sand, then compacting the sand to stabilise the surface. Sand joints are flexible, which means they can better manage movement due to freezing/thawing. However, they may require reapplication of sand over time.

      Polymer joints and grouting

Polymer joints are similar to sand joints, but specially formulated polymer sand is used. After filling the joints with this sand, water is added to activate polymerisation. Polymer joints harden to become strong, water and weed resistant. They are durable and require less maintenance than sand joints.

How to choose the right joints for your paving project?

The choice of joints for your outdoor paving will depend on a number of factors, including aesthetics, stability, drainage, expected load and maintenance. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right joint filler:

Style and design: Select joints that match the style of your pavers and your outdoor space. Consider the colour and thickness of your joints.
Durability: Choose joints that will withstand local climatic conditions and wear, depending on their intended use.
Maintenance: Consider the maintenance required to keep your joints in good condition.
Drainage: Make sure that the joints allow good water drainage to avoid problems with water accumulation. For better drainage, opt for grass or sand joints.

Once you’ve taken these factors into account, you can choose the joints that are best suited to your outdoor paving project.
