Reclaimed cobblestones

Reclaimed cobblestones

Reclaimed cobblestones are part of a circular economy. 100% natural, stone pavers are durable and can be reused endlessly. This is the case with our antique paving stones, which are recovered, cleaned, graded, sorted and sometimes sawn, and reused for urban and landscaping projects. Reusing these recycled paving stones has two advantages: it’s environmentally friendly, and it uses products and materials with an inimitable appearance.

Recycled pavers : recycling and reuse

Old setts come from road renovations and property development sites. These reclaimed setts were laid at the end of the 19th century and then covered with asphalt during the 20th century to reduce noise, improve grip and, more anecdotally, prevent demonstrators from using them as projectiles!

The recovered pavers are then cleaned and sorted by size, colour and type (sandstone, granite, prophyre, etc.).

Sawn cobbles and setts

To meet the needs of certain projects, terraces, pedestrian streets or driveways, old or recycled paving stones can be sawn to provide perfect flatness and access for people with reduced mobility (PRM). This is the case, for example, in the “Place des écoles” in Lyon, where the existing cobbles were removed, cleaned, sawn and then replaced in the same square.

Recovered cobblestones can also be used by private individuals to create driveways, terraces, garage lanes, etc. These historic cobblestones add authenticity and charm to landscaping and gardens.

Towns and villages don’t hesitate to lay entire recycled paving stones to embellish their squares or highlight places steeped in history. The town of “Varacieux” in Isère, France, chose to renovate the village square to highlight its recently restored fountain, as well as its heritage monuments: the church, the cross and the pond.

The environmental impact of recycled cobbles and setts

Recovering cobblestones and reusing them on a national or even European level has a strong environmental impact, as it avoids tonnes of waste going to landfill sites, reduces the transport of stones, and recycles old stones in new development projects.

Recycling and reusing old cobblestones therefore has an ecological impact as well as historical charm.
