What types of pebbles can be used to create calades?

What types of pebbles to use for creating a calade?

A calade is a type of traditional paving, typically used in streets or pathways. It is made up of pebbles or small stones, carefully arranged to form a solid and walkable surface. Calades were frequently used in the sloping streets and alleys of villages to facilitate the flow of water. They are considered part of the architectural heritage of towns and villages in the south of France, particularly in Provence.

Shape and Size of the Pebbles

Choosing the right pebbles is an important step before starting the installation and creation of a calade. Natural river pebbles, smooth and round in shape, are particularly well-suited for making calades.

The size of your pebbles can vary, but we recommend using whole pebbles ranging from 60 mm to 80 mm.

To create a Provençal calade with split or cleaved pebbles, it is better to use larger pebbles, from 120 mm to 200 mm.

Colors of the Pebbles

The choice of colors is also an important consideration; the arrangement of pebbles in different colors and shades will allow for the creation of patterns or mosaics during the installation of the pebbles.

The natural shades of the pebbles are closely related to their geological origin, giving rise to a palette ranging from yellow to ochre, through to grey. This variety is obtained from a mixture of granite, limestone, and basalt, providing light and calming colors that harmonize with the natural tones of the region’s soil.

Our Selection of Pebbles

Whole River Pebbles:
Known as “cat’s head pebbles,” river pebbles are natural, round, and polished stones found in rivers. Their nickname comes from their shape, which resembles a cat’s head, with soft contours and a smooth surface. We offer a variety of colors and sizes, including warm tones such as beige, yellow, grey, and ochre, with dimensions ranging from 60 to 80 mm, 80 to 120 mm, and 120 to 200 mm.

Cleaved Pebbles:
Cleaved pebbles, also known as “stable pebbles,” are a modified version of traditional pebbles. They are split or broken to create a flatter and more rustic surface. This cleaving process, carefully controlled, creates a non-slip texture, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and giving a rustic style.

Sawn Pebbles:
Sawn pebbles, also known as “Provençal calade,” is a paving technique originating from Provence. It involves cutting the pebbles on top to create a flat and uniform surface while maintaining their natural character. This method blends traditional aesthetics with modern practicality for projects that embody Provençal charm and provide access for people with reduced mobility (PRM).
