What are the differences between granite and sandstone paving cobbles?

by | Apr 29, 2024 | Stones

Sandstone and granite paving cobbles are two types of reclaimed paving stones commonly used in landscaping and construction. They differ significantly in terms of composition, colour, texture, strength and applications. Here are the main differences between sandstone pavers and granite pavers:

Composition:

Reclaimed Sandstone cobblestones are made from sandstone, a natural stone and sedimentary rock composed mainly of grains of sand, quartz, feldspar and sometimes mica.

Reclaimed Granite cobbles are made from a plutonic igneous rock formed from the crystallisation of magma. Granite is mainly composed of minerals such as quartz, feldspar and mica.

Colour and Appearance:

Antique sandstone pavers are available in a variety of colours, including beige, ochre, brown, grey and other shades depending on the geological source. They often have a grainy or rough texture but a natural surface and patina due to the wear and tear of time.

Granite paving stones are also available in a range of colours, including pink, grey, black and beige. Their surface is smooth and authentic.

Weathering and natural patina: Salvaged and reclaimed cobblestones have generally stood the test of time, giving them a natural weatherd patina. Their surface may show irregularities, cracks and wear marks, which add character to the stone.

Irregular shapes: Unlike modern paving stones, which are often uniform in shape and size, old paving stones can have a variety of irregular shapes. They are generally rectangular or square.

History and provenance of our reclaimed cobble setts: One of the most interesting aspects of old reclaimed cobblestones is their history. They can come from old streets, historic buildings or other places of historical significance. Chosing reclaimed paving materials adds an authentic charm to your landscaping projects.
