Alto Douro granite is a natural granite stone extracted from the quarries of the Douro Valley in Portugal. Concerned about the ecological impact, Noblema favours short circuits by sourcing its supplies from Portugal.
Particularities of the Alto Douro
Noblema uses granite in various products: setts, flagstones and coping stones, for the main ones but also for basins, fountains and custom-made decorative elements.
All these products are available in different finishes:
- Bushhammered: the surface of the stone is struck with small blows with a bushhammer which is a steel hammer composed of a checkerboard of pyramidal points. The stone becomes rougher and non-slip. This technique is also called “sanded”.
- Flamed: the surface of the stone is passed under a flame at high temperature. This technique brings out the colour of the stone and restores the anti-slip effect, just like bush-hammered stone.
- Splintered: the stone is split by a machine called a splitter. The effect is rough and rustic.
The splitter
The colours of Alto Douro stone are beige, pink, black, dark grey and tightly grained grey. The latter gives a more uniform colour to the granite.
The different uses of the Alto Douro
Granite is the ally of your exteriors. We find it around a swimming pool in coping, on a terrace in flagstones, around a summer living room in small cubes of seats, decorated with a net of water in fountains or basins.
In summer, it has the particularity of not storing heat. It is therefore comfortable to walk barefoot around a swimming pool.
In winter, it combines the advantages of being very hard, robust and non-porous, which makes it resistant to frost, shocks and scratches.
